RICHLAND, Wash. About 50 elementary-age children will show off their knowledge of sports science at 10 a.m. Friday, July 11, with wacky activities like the paper plate discus and cotton ball shot-put.
The “big event” is the closing ceremony for the “Guts and Glory: Extreme Sports Science” summer science camp, held at Washington State University Tri-Cities in the Consolidated Information Center, 2770 University Drive, Richland.
Friday morning, the campers will make customized jump ropes for a jumping competition. Then they’ll challenge themselves with zany activities like the lung power relay and cup-and-paper stacking.
During the week, the campers learned about anatomy, biology and physiology. They conducted hands-on experiments about circulation and respiration, constructed K’Nex toys to demonstrate muscles and balance, and built an interactive model of the human body. They discovered how sports shoes give athletes a competitive edge and tested Newton’s laws of motion with bowling and balloon air rockets.
This is the third of eight summer science camps held on the WSU Tri-Cities campus for children who will be entering kindergarten through fifth grade in Fall 2008. The weeklong sessions use curriculum from Knowledge Learning Cooperation and are led by certified teachers. Other camp themes are Gizmos, Gadgets & Goop; Science Detective; and Space & Rocketry.
