WSU hosts 4-H teen conference

PULLMAN – More than two-hundred teens from across the state will take part in this year’s 4-H Teen Conference at WSU from June 29 to July 1.

The three-day program features action-filled activities, educational workshops, college and career information, and recreation.

Monday workshops include: forensic science, leadership skills,
developing and presenting a television news broadcast, creating a digital mood board, geocaching, chemistry reactions and climate change issues.

The teens will live in dorms on campus, learn about college life and meet others to discover new opportunities now and for the future. The conference is open to all youth entering 8th through 12th grades.

National speaker Lateefah Simon will speak at 8:30 a.m., Monday, at Beasley Theater. Simon,26, the youngest person to be awarded a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, will discuss how youth can rise to the challenge and create change in their lives and in the lives of others.

The public is welcome to attend Simon’s free presentation.

Simon joined the Center for Young Women’s Development in San Francisco at 15 as a hotline volunteer. Four years later, she became executive director of the organization.

For the past 11 years of her tenure with the organization, she provided approximately 3,500 women with the tools they needed to transform and rebuild their lives.

She currently is director of re-entry programs in the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office.

The Conference is sponsored by WSU Extension 4-H and is open to all youth throughout the state.
