Final two provost candidates to visit

PULLMAN – The final two candidates for the position of provost and executive vice president of WSU are scheduled to visit the university next week.

Jeffrey Armstrong, dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources at Michigan State University, will be on campus May 13. He will appear at an open forum at 3 p.m. in Room T-101 of the Food Sciences and Human Nutrition Building on the Pullman campus.

Cheryl Achterberg, dean of the College of Human Sciences at Iowa State University, will be on campus May 14 and will attend an open forum at 3 p.m. at T-101.

Both open forums will be simulcast to the WSU campuses at Spokane, Vancouver and the Tri-Cities. Both candidates also will hold a series of meetings with members of the search committee and various campus groups during their visits.

Armstrong earned his bachelor’s degree in animal science from Murray State University and his master’s and doctoral degrees in physiology from North Carolina State. He was a long-time faculty member in the Department of Animal Science at North Carolina State and served as assistant director of academic programs and director of the Agricultural Institute in the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences there. He went on to head the Department of Animal Sciences at Purdue before moving to his current position at MSU in 2001.

Armstrong’s research focuses on the interaction of nutrition and reproduction in farm animals. An internationally known researcher in the area of reproductive physiology, his research has focused on the interaction of nutrition and reproduction in cattle and swine. He has been cited in numerous articles regarding animal welfare and behavior. He served as president of the American Society of Animal Science from 2000-2001.

Achterberg earned her bachelor’s degree in biological sciences from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, a master’s degree in human development from the University of Maine at Orono and a doctoral degree in nutrition from Cornell. She was a faculty member in the Nutritional Sciences Department at Pennsylvania State University and became the director of the Penn State Nutrition Center. In 1997, she became acting dean of the Schreyer Honors College at Penn State, with responsibility for launching that college. She served as dean there until 2005, when she assumed her current role at Iowa State.

She has had a number of articles published on nutrition issues regarding children and low-income populations, and has also published on subjects related to honors programs. She served as an external reviewer for the Washington State University Honors College in 2005. She is a member of a number of professional organizations, including the American Public Health Association, the American Institute of Nutrition and the National Collegiate Honors Council.

Warwick Bayly, dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine, is chairing the provost search committee. Robert Bates, who has served as the university’s academic leader for the past six years, announced in January that he would be stepping down from the position of provost and executive vice president effective July 1.
