On Sunday, March 30th the Palouse will have the unique opportunity of hosting a performance of Peru Negro as part of the company’s West Coast tour.
They have toured the world celebrating their culture and Black pride,and this years tour includes performances at UC Davis, UC Berkeley, the Hult Center in Eugene and the Washington Center in Olympia.
The event is sponsored by Festival Dance & Performing Arts, Peru Negro, an internationally renowned company from Lima, Peru has been given the title, “Ambassadors of Peruvian Culture” by their government for their work in preserving and performing works of Peru’s African heritage.
The 26 member ensemble includes percussionists, guitarists, singers and dancers all who bring the stage alive with an authentic “festejo,” a word derived from the Spanish word for celebration.
Peru Negro is noted both for their musical accomplishments and their dynamic and diverse dance.
Perú Negro’s second U.S.-released album, Jolgorio, received both a Grammy nomination for Best Traditional World Music Album as well as a Latin Grammy nomination.
Audiences are treated to a colorful display of unusual instruments including the cajon, evolved from farm crates used to collect fruit, and the guijada de burro, the side of a dried out donkey jaw, as well as guitars, drums, and passionate singing and dancing.
Dance styles range from Latin American to African, an impressive display of intricate Zapteo challengedancing. Beautiful and colorful costumes and masks complete this vibrant pageant of music and dance.
