PULLMAN – WSU Department of Residence Life will be hosting the fifth annual Tunnel of Oppression exhibit. The event will be held at McCroskey Residence Hall Feb. 5-7 from 4-8 p.m. and Feb. 8 from 3-9 p.m.
The Tunnel has been a way for the WSU and Pullman community to learn different forms of diversity and oppression. This year, attendees will be given the opportunity to gain knowledge on topics such as race, gender, disability, socioeconomic status and global violence.
Attendees will take a tour through a series of rooms where different forms of injustice and other scenarios are acted out and/or depicted. Once the tour is finished, attendees can enter another room to participate in a group discussion and reflect on any issues. A former participant said, “It was valuable for me to learn about the amount of people affected by oppression and read some of their stories.”
The purpose of this national and educational tool is to raise awareness and promote diversity education. The Tunnel of Oppression is intended to be an eye-opening and conscious building experience to stimulate thoughts and emotions around the issues presented, organizers said.
With numbers of attendees increasing every year, the Department of Residence Life hopes to reach out and educate more than 1,000 people in 2008.
