• Nanoscientist Lai-Sheng Wang, professor of physics and materials science at WSU Tri-Cities and affiliate senior chief scientist at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), has been elected to the rank of fellow in the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS). Wang’s election recognizes his “distinguished and innovative contributions to the field of atomic clusters and for pioneering work on gaseous multiply charged anions.”

Three others at WSU have been elected AAAS fellows this year: Wendy C. Brown and David Prieur in veterinary medicine and Tim Kohler in anthropology.

• Associate professor Marcia “Marcy” Ostrom is recipient of the 2007 Western Regional Excellence in Extension Award for the WSU Small Farms Program that she established in 2000 and directs. The honor is one of five regional awards and one national award given annually by the National Association of State Universities and Land Grant Colleges. Among other criteria, recipients are chosen for implementing high impact educational programs and demonstrating visionary leadership.

• Professor Lance T. LeLoup has been awarded the Aaron Wildavsky Lifetime Achievement Award for Research in Public Budgeting by the Association for Budgeting and Financial Management, the largest section of the American Society for Public Administration. The award was presented for his record of research and publications that spans more than 30 years.

• Professor Joseph S. Valacich has been appointed one of 15 senior editors for Management Information Systems Quarterly, one of the premier journals for the discipline of information systems.

Terry Hassold, professor, molecular biosciences, has been elected to the board of directors for the American Society for Human Genetics.

• WSU Tri-Cities professor Terrell Young has been inducted into the Washington Organization for Reading Development Hall of Fame in recognition of his work on behalf of early childhood literacy. The Hall of Fame honor usually is reserved for a retiree.

Steve Hirsch, clinical assistant professor in psychology at WSU Spokane, will serve on Washington’s RTI-2 (Re-Tooling Instruction through Response to Intervention) Leadership Team. The team will work on instructional modules for statewide professional development.

• The male body-image poster series displayed around WSU Pullman last spring earned Health and Wellness Services a bronze award and honorable mention in two national competitions. The National Health Information Resource Center gave the posters a bronze from among 1,000 entries in the annual National Health Information Awards. The posters also earned honorable mention from the 2007 Communicator Awards, an international awards competition that recognizes outstanding work in the communication field.

Tamara Holmlund Nelson, assistant professor in education at WSU Vancouver, is one of three dozen researchers, policy makers, practitioners and opinion leaders to be invited to a symposium on “Induction of Science and Mathematics Teachers into Professional Learning Communities.” Hosted by the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future, the conference is focused on retention of effective K-12 science and mathematics teachers.
