A cold kickoff

The ‘whir’ of RV heaters and generators could be heard all throughout WSU overnight parking areas Friday as early-arriving Cougar fans prepared for a brisk and blustery Homecoming Weekend in Pullman.

“What happened to summer?” said Bill Hunter (’75, Business), huddled in a long-sleeved sweater by his camper Friday afternoon.

“We’re hoping it snows tomorrow so Arizona will be out of their comfort zone,” said Craig Roberts, setting up a sitting area for an expected group of 25 people.

Despite chilly temperatures, parking areas filled up fast — some lots full as early as Thursday night.

“We’ve been season ticket holders for eight years and have never seen it this crowded, this early,” said Carol Evans, prepping a pop-up tent trailer with her husband, Robert.  The couple expected a group of 24 people, “all family and all alums”, for Saturday’s game.

“I recommend being able to reserve spots,” said Scott Erickson (’81), gesturing to the narrow gaps between a crowded line of RVs.

Erickson, who faithfully attends every Cougar Football Saturday, said it will take more than cool temperatures and crowded parking though to deter him.  “We’ll be here next game regardless,” he said.
