WSU hosts Environmental Health and Safety Conference

The Fourth Annual Washington State University Environmental Health & Safety Conference and Award Ceremony will be held Oct. 4 at the Schweitzer Engineering Event Center, 1825 Schweitzer Drive. Doors will open at 11:30 a.m. to allow conference participants to interact with various WSU and community service organizations.

Attendees are encouraged to bring their own lunch for an initial noon panel discussion, which will be open to the general public and feature local law enforcement officers and mental health specialists discussing community and workplace violence. The panel will include Pullman Police Chief Ted Weatherly, Moscow Police Lieutenant Paul Kwiatkowski, Mike Berney of Palouse River Counseling, Barbara Hammond of WSU Counseling Services, and Jim Trivelpiece of Idaho Health and Welfare Behavioral Health in Moscow.

Following the opening public presentation, those attending from WSU are invited to remain for an additional session focused on the university’s newly implemented emergency response plans and equipment. WSU safety committee members, department heads and administrators will learn from a panel of WSU officials how the recently installed siren and public address system will be used and how the university plans to further develop electronic notification systems to communicate with students and employees during emergencies affecting WSU and surrounding communities.
 
Panel members will include WSU Police Lieutenant Steven Hansen, WSU Emergency Management Coordinator Chris Tapfer, WSU Information Technology Services Communications and Network Services Director Dave Ostrom, WSU Student Health and Wellness Services Director Bruce Wright, M.D., WSU Counseling Services Director Barbara Hammond, and WSU Dean of Students Lucila Loera.

The conference also will feature educational seminars on laboratory safety, developing emergency response plans, wellbeing and stress management, emergency food and water availability and workplace ergonomics.

WSU Provost Robert Bates also will present special awards to safety committees and individuals for outstanding work in environmental, health, and safety activities during the past year.
