RICHLAND, Wash. — The first freshmen at Washington State University Tri-Cities on Wednesday will receive the laptops provided by Lockheed Martin Information Technology.
A group of about 20 freshmen will get their laptops at 10 a.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, in the Consolidated Information Center, upstairs in room 216, on the WSU Tri-Cities campus, 2770 University Drive, Richland.
The process will be kicked off with informal comments by WSU Tri-Cities Chancellor Vicky L. Carwein and Frank Armijo, Lockheed Martin Information Technology general manager.
Lockheed Martin generously donated the reconditioned laptops as part of the WSU Tri-Cities freshman recruitment package. The other part of the package is a $3,000 scholarship during the freshman year and another $3,000 scholarship in the senior year, provided they stay at the Richland campus.
As the number of incoming freshmen rose — from the initial goal of 35 to the fall semester enrollment count of 117 — Lockheed increased the number of laptops so that each qualifying full-time freshman could receive one.
“This donation underscores Lockheed Martin’s tremendous ongoing support of higher education in the Tri-Cities,” Carwein said, adding that the laptops are a vital learning tool to new students who might have limited financial resources.
