WSU to celebrate 5th annual Seattle Week



SEATTLE — Washington State University has a number of academic, alumni and entertainment events planned for its fifth annual “Seattle Week” Sept. 5-8, including a gridiron football match-up with the Cougars taking on the San Diego State University Aztecs.

The Cougar Gridiron Classic is set for a 4 p.m. kick off Sept. 8 at Qwest Field. For ticket information, visit https://www.wsucougars.com/ or call (800) GO-COUGS. The alumni association will host the Sterling Savings Pre-game Rally from 1 to 3:30 p.m. in the Qwest Field Event Center.

The Innovators luncheon will begin its fall series Sept. 5 with “Challenges in the Air: Facing the Issue of Global Climate Change.” WSU researchers George Mount and Brian Lamb, both with the College of Engineering and Architecture, will discuss how human activity and climate change could cause alterations of atmospheric temperatures leading to irreversible global damage. Luncheon registration will begin at 11:30 a.m. in The Rainier Club in downtown Seattle. Cougar Jazz Night, with Jazz Northwest, WSU’s faculty jazz group, is set for Sept. 6 at Tula’s Restaurant and Nightclub, 2214 2nd Ave., Seattle. The reception begins at 7 p.m. with the concert to start at 8 p.m. The public is welcome. Tickets are $40 each, $75 for couples. Reservations are required. WSU at Benaroya Hall: In Concert with Communities is set for 6:30-8:30 p.m.
Sept. 6. The event will showcase the partnerships between WSU faculty and community members—farmers, ranchers, fishers, business owners and nonprofit leaders. Appetizers will be prepared by some of Seattle’s top chefs using Washington-grown ingredients that are supplied by farmers and ranchers also in attendance. Admission is $40 for adults ($15 for children 5-18) by Aug. 31 and $50 ($20 for children) at the door. Children under 5 are free.

The WSU Power Breakfast is set for 7:30-9 a.m. Sept. 7 at the Sheraton Seattle Hotel. Bill Ayer, chief executive officer of Alaska Air Group and chair, president and CEO of Alaska Airlines, will be the keynote speaker. President Elson S. Macy’s Fifth Annual Future Cougars of Color Diversity Scholarship Luncheon is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sept. 7. The event raises scholarship money for high-achieving high school students of color from across the state that plan to attend WSU. Westlake Center Mall will be the site of the WSU Spirit Rally, set to begin at 5 p.m. Sept. 7. University leadership, the WSU Marching Band, cheer squad and Cougar mascot Butch will be in attendance. The public is invited to attend the rally, located at the corner of 5th Avenue and Pine Street.
