WSU is encoding employee and student information to keep it safe. Recent and ongoing efforts to protect confidential and nonpublic university information, under the guidance of the data task force and Information Technology Services, include:
Identification of several encryption products that meet the requirements of the WSU University Data Policies. Data must be protected during network transmission by using secure transport mechanisms. The policies require that university confidential data be stored or transported on mobile computing devices or media (e.g., laptops, tablets, flash drives, CD-ROM, DVD) only as needed. The most effective means of complying with the policies is to not store sensitive data on mobile devices or media. More information on encryption and storage is available ONLINE @ https://stargate.it.wsu.edu/security/DataSecurity.html.
Review of Administrative Information Systems (AIS) access in several WSU organizational areas. This is a precursor to the longer term plan of reauthorizing all university employees. Systems access is being determined by the appropriate data custodian based on the particular business need.
Removal or masking of confidential information in student and employee AIS systems.
Requiring as of Aug. 6 that employees who access student information update their FERPA (federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act) training every three years. Training is available ONLINE @ www.ronet.wsu.edu/Main/Apps/FERPATest.asp.
