WSU to Hold University Convocation at Beasley

PULLMAN, Wash. – Incoming Washington State University students and their parents are invited to join faculty, staff and administrators at the University Convocation to be held at 10 a.m. Aug. 17 at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.

The event is designed to welcome new individuals to the WSU learning community and mark the beginning of their WSU experience. Additionally, the event will demonstrate some of the school’s history and traditions.

“Our emphasis is to welcome new students, parents, new and returning faculty, and staff back to campus and celebrate the start of the new academic year,” said Luke Jones, assistant director of New Student Programs.

“New students will receive their entering year pin and their commemorative program and bookmark. We get students excited about the school year and encourage them to look forward to graduation, which is the next time they will all be gathered together in such a manner.”

The theme for Convocation 2007 is “Scholars Change the World One Idea at a Time.”

“Convocation, which has been planned by New Student Programs for several years, has been ongoing for many decades,” said Jones. “Last year was the first year we tried this formal presentation including the president, faculty and staff, and tied it in with the all campus picnic. The feedback was extremely positive and we are building on last year’s success.”

This is the first convocation for WSU President Elson S. Floyd, who will address his first incoming class. Other speakers include WSU Provost and Executive Vice President Robert Bates; Thomas Dickinson, Regents Professor – Physics; and Luci Loera, interim dean of students.

At the conclusion of the ceremony, at approximately 11:15 a.m., faculty, students and staff are invited to attend the 23rd All-Campus Picnic on the Mooberry Track. Food is free for all faculty, staff and students carrying their WSU Cougar Card.

Classes at all four of WSU’s campuses – in Pullman, Spokane, Vancouver and Tri-Cities, will begin Aug. 20.
