The students were each placed in an internship that coordinated with their academic interests and career goals.
The students are: Kathrina Estoque from Seattle, a sociology and women’s studies major in the College of Liberal Arts (CLA), who is working with the D.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence; Ciera Graham from Seattle, sociology and pre-law major in CLA, working for Offender Aid and Restoration; Amy Van Nortwick from Mount Vernon, neuroscience major in the College of Veterinary Medicine and a member of the Honors College, working for the Alzheimer’s Association; Amelia Veneziano from Kennewick, journalism major (CLA), working for the D.C. Examiner newspaper; and Tom Westphal from Richland, political science major (CLA) also in the Honors College, working for the National Defense University NESA Center.
Each student also attends an academic class in a traditional discipline.
The students received a $4,000 scholarship from the Washington Higher Education Coordinating Board. Scholarships from The Washington Center included the Diversity Leaders Award, the Civic Engagement Award, and the National Collegiate Honors Council Scholarship. In addition, the WSU Office of Student Affairs provided financial assistance to the students.
