WSU Veterinary College Hosts Open House for Mom’s Weekend

PULLMAN, Wash.—Washington State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine is hosting an open house during Mom’s Weekend this Saturday, April 14.

The Veterinary Teaching Hospital will be open from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday with a wide range of family-friendly activities occurring all day.

The morning begins with a 5-kilometer fun run where dogs are invited. Dubbed the “Canine Canter,” the event begins at 10 a.m. sharp. Pre-registration is requested and costs less. Forms are available at: https://www.vetmed.wsu.edu/clubsK9/CanineCanterEntryForm.pdf . Pre-registration is $12 and registration from 9 to 9:45 a.m. on race day is $15. A current rabies tag or certificate of vaccination is required for dogs to run with their owners.

The college will provide flowers for all moms in attendance and balloons and candy for children.

WSU veterinary students will be hosting several informational and interactive booths with plenty of prize giveaways and free items like pet food samples and other pet care products.

From 10 to noon, a draft horse demonstration will take place in the round pen behind the teaching hospital. During the same time, the Shelter Medicine Club and the Whitman County Humane Society will host a dog wash for the public’s animals, too.

At noon, working dogs take the stage beginning with performances by a fly ball team, police dogs, and search and rescue dog demonstrations.

From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., WSU mascot “Butch,” will be on hand for photos.

Throughout the day, a number of informative lectures will cover subjects including: dangerous houseplants; horse first aid, raptor rehabilitation, the WSU canine blood donor program, and a public health disease update covering avian influenza, mad cow disease, and West Nile virus.
