Speaker to present keynote, workshops on education

PULLMAN  – World-renowned author, consultant, and educator Thomas A. Angelo will visit the Washington State University campus April 11 and 12 to present a keynote address and several workshops on the latest news about teaching, learning and classroom assessment in higher education in America.

Angelo’s speech, entitled, “Pressures, Promises, Pitfalls, and Pathways: Lessons from 20 Years of Assessment in U.S. Higher Education,” will be at 4 p.m. Wednesday, April 11, in the Smith Center for Undergraduate Education (CUE) Room 203. A reception and book signing will follow.

A poster session will precede the keynote address from 3 – 5 p.m. in the CUE second floor atrium. It will highlight the work of numerous recipients of Teaching and Learning Improvement Initiative Grants from the WSU Office of Undergraduate Education since 2002.

“We are honored to welcome such an internationally acclaimed expert on the subject of teaching, learning, and assessment as Tom Angelo to address our world-class faculty and graduate students,” said WSU Provost and Executive Vice President Robert Bates. “Dr. Angelo has authored books that define standards for success in higher education. We are looking forward to hearing his latest insights into how we can enhance the academic experience of our students.”

Coordinating events is the WSU President’s Teaching Academy, composed of faculty members who provide leadership to strengthen undergraduate and graduate teaching and learning across the university.

The workshops for faculty will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m. in Todd Hall Addition 268:
– Wednesday, April 11, “Seven Levers for Higher and Deeper Learning: Research-based Guidelines and Strategies for Improving Teaching, Assessment, and Learning.”

-Thursday, April 12, “Making Real the Scholarship of Teaching: Developing Your Own Classroom Research Agenda.”

A workshop for graduate students is scheduled for Thursday, April 12, 9 – 11 a.m. in CUE 512, titled, “Pulling It All Together: Making Coursework Clear, Coherent, Connected, and Consequential.”

Angelo received his doctorate from Harvard University’s Graduate School of Education, his master’s from Boston University, and his bachelor’s degree from California State University – Sacramento. He currently is a professor of higher education and director of the University Teaching Development Centre at Victoria University in Wellington, New Zealand.

He has been a faculty member, faculty developer, academic administrator, and researcher at the University of Akron (Ohio), DePaul University, Miami University, the American Association for Higher Education, Boston College, California State University – Long Beach, the University of California – Berkeley, and Harvard. In 1998, Change magazine named him one of America’s “Forty Young Leaders of the Academy.”

He has published three books and more than 30 articles and chapters during his career as an educator. His Jossey-Bass book in 1998 is titled “Classroom Assessment and Classroom Research: An Update on Uses, Approaches, and Research Findings.” “Classroom Assessment Techniques: A Handbook for College Teachers (with K. Patricia Cross) was published in 1993. And, “Classroom Research: Early Lessons from Success” was published in 1991.
