Catch up with Cougar coaches

Three decades ago, a large black man stood alongside Friel Court in Pullman, arms upraised, hands fluttering, a human antenna channeling noise from capacity crowds. He dressed in the bold manner of the day — plaid suits, bell bottoms with half-boots.

George Raveling, the first Washington State coach in a building now 34 years old, got the place rocking with his irrepressible energy. He recruited hard, coached hard, courted the media and sweated profusely through designer shirts. Always, he worked it.
