A campus is a place where the big issues of the day should be debated, and immigration is certainly one of those issues. The recent demonstration and counter-demonstration on our campus showed that some members of our university community are deeply concerned about that issue, and we welcome that dialogue.
Unfortunately, it appears that some, including faculty, who were involved exercised very poor judgment in their speech and actions. Our university is committed to being a place where people can exercise their free speech rights without fear of harassment or intimidation. We expect all members of the university community faculty, staff and students to carry on these discussions in a civil and constructive way.
Our Center for Human Rights is currently looking into some of the charges that have emerged from this confrontation. We expect to have a fuller picture very soon.
