Dad’s Weekend crowded with activities

PULLMAN– A full slate of activities will commence here this Friday as the Washington State University Cougars once again celebrate Dad’s Weekend and make ready to take on the Wildcats of the University of Arizona in a Pac-10 football game Saturday afternoon , Nov. 4 at Martin Stadium.

The weekend’s events will commence Friday with a women’s soccer matchup between WSU and the Arizona State Sun Devils beginning at 2 p.m. at the Lower Soccer Field. Also at 2 p.m., students and their fathers can begin the weekend with an adrenaline rush by participating in the Dad’s Challenge on the University Recreation Ropes Course.

Participants will be able to strap themselves into climbing harnesses to explore WSU’s world-class Track-N-Trail at 15 and 27 feet above the ground and end the experience by climbing the 32-foot Cougar Perch, where they can leap and punch the Wildcat. Friday evening activities will include a women’s pre-season basketball clash between WSU and the Warriors of Lewis & Clark State College at 7 p.m.
at Bohler Gym and the 23rd Annual Sigma Iota Wine Fest. Sigma Iota, a student association within the School of Hospitality Business Management, sponsors this annual event to raise money for scholarships, guest lecturers and other educational purposes. Wines are available to sample and purchase and hearty hors d’oeuvres are served. Tickets to the event, which begins at 5 p.m., are $25 and can be obtained by calling (509) 335-0130.

Another culinary event featuring fine wines will be this weekend’s Feast of the Arts – complete with dining, wine, music and art- scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday in the Todd Hall Dining Room. In addition to offering gourmet meals created by the executive chefs and students of the WSU School of Hospitality Business Management, Friday’s Feast will begin with a reception featuring performances by vocalists and musicians from the WSU School of Music and Theatre Arts. During the reception, WSU Museum of Art staff will also present provide expert insights on a number of handpicked pieces from the museum’s collection. At 8 p.m. Friday in the Bryan Hall Theatre, Vocal Extravaganza will present a showcase of the six outstanding vocal ensembles within the WSU School of Music. Tickets to the concert, which features the Madrigal Singers, University Singers, Concert Choir, Opera Workshop, VoJazz, and Crimson Revue, are $5 for students and seniors, and $10 for the general public. They are available from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. daily this week and beginning at 6 p.m. Friday in the Bryan Hall Lobby.

Saturday’s events will begin at 9 a.m. in the Stevenson Dining Center with the Dad of the Year ceremony, where sons, daughters and other members of the university community annually honor the top WSU dad of the year. Additional information on the event is available by calling 509-335-2284.

Saturday’s events will continue at 10 a.m. with an Open House at the WSU Bear Center, near the corner of Grimes Way and Lincoln Drive. The public is invited to meet the bears and learn about the facility’s research. At the same time, a daylong WSU Alumni Welcome event will commence at the the Lewis Alumni Centre, which is located near the intersection of Grimes Way and Lincoln Drive. Cougar alumni and friends of the university are invited to drop by throughout the day.

Beginning three hours before Saturday’s kickoff, game-goers and others can enjoy a meal and catch the game day spirit at the Food Fair at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse north of Martin Stadium. Also, from two hours prior to the game until 30 minutes after kickoff, the WSU Food Science Club will host a Cougar Football Barbecue in the Ferdinand’s parking lot. The $5-per-person event will feature Cougar Gold Cheeseburgers and Cougar Smokies prepared by the Food Science Club.

At 2 p.m., the Cougars take on the Wildcats at Martin Stadium in what may prove a key late-season Pac-10 contest for the Cougs. Available game tickets can be obtained by calling 1-800-GO-COUGS, option 3, or visiting wsucougars.cstv.com on the Web.

Food and refreshments will continue to be served at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse for 90 minutes following the football game. Then at 8:30 p.m., Bill Cosby will perform a special Dad’s Weekend performance at the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum.
