Professor speaks about public opinion of nuclear weapons

PULLMAN – Paul Brians, professor of English at Washington State University, will speak next week on the public policy series “Justice Talking” on National Public Radio (NPR).

The program, entitled “Nuclear Disarmament: An Impossible Dream?” is produced by correspondent Margot Adler and will be broadcast in streaming audio beginning October 9 on the show’s Web site.

The episode featuring Brians can also be heard on Spokane Public Radio, KSFC 91.9 FM, on Wednesday, October 11, at 9:00 p.m. and will be repeated Saturday, October 14, at 1:00 p.m.

Brians is the author of “Nuclear Holocausts: Atomic War in Fiction” and many articles on the subject. He is also the creator of the Web site “Nuke Pop,” which led “Justice Talking” to him.

Brians is interested in public attitudes about nuclear weapons and the threat of nuclear war, and the new network TV show “Jericho” has his attention. The series is about people who are stranded in the U.S. following the annihilation of most cities.

“It will be interesting to see how successful the show is,” said Brians. “It’s extremely difficult to get the public focused on the issue of nuclear war, and in fact Americans traditionally have avoided thinking about nuclear war as much as possible. They tend to quickly turn away without wanting to consider it in depth.”
