New dean withdraws; interim dean announced

Provost Robert Bates announced today that Robert Anders has informed the WSU administration that he is withdrawing from the position of dean of the College of Nursing that he was recently appointed to for personal reasons. He will remain at University of Texas El Paso.

Anne Hirsch, senior associate dean for academic affairs in the College of Nursing has accepted appointment as interim dean for the College of Nursing.

Hirsch’s clinical background is in primarily critical care with experiences in ER, open heart surgery, ICU and CCU. She also is a practicing family nurse practitioner. She taught medical-surgical nursing/pathophysiology for five years in Kentucky, 15 years at Pacific Lutheran University where she served as associate dean in the school of nursing. She has been in her current role at the ICN since 1998.

Hirsch received her BSN in 1974 from the ICN/Washington State University College of Nursing, her master of nursing in 1977 in physiological nursing/cardiopulmonary from the University of Washington, Seattle, Washington, and her DNS in 1983 in nursing synthesis from Indiana University, Indianapolis, Indiana.

Bates said “I am very pleased that Anne Hirsch has accepted this additional assignment. She brings a wealth of experience and understanding of nursing education and administration. I am delighted that she is willing to serve in this important role which will be effective Sept. 18 upon the retirement of Dean Dorothy Detlor. The search for the permanent dean will continue in the fall semester with the able assistance of the search committee and search firm. Linda Fox, dean and director of WSU Extension will continue to chair the search committee.”
