Kyle Smith named as WSU Student Regent

PULLMAN — Kyle Smith, a Washington State University senior majoring in environmental science and regional planning with a minor in political science, has been named as student member of the WSU Board of Regents for the 2006-2007 academic year.

Smith’s appointment was announced July 14 by Gov. Christine Gregoire’s office. The appointment runs through June 30, 2007.

Smith, who is from Spokane, said he became interested in serving as a student regent when he read a Daily Evergreen article about the experiences of Brady Horenstein, who served as student regent for 2004-2005.

“The idea really caught my interest. It seemed like a good way to get involved and make a difference on campus,” Smith said.

During his time at WSU, Smith has already made a difference, serving as the president of the Environmental Science Club, chairman of the ASWSU Environmental Task Force and member of the University Health and Safety Committee. He has worked for WSU’s Environmental Health and Safety Department and was involved in the drafting of Executive Policy #25, the sustainability initiative for WSU, which was approved by President V. Lane Rawlins in November 2005.

In 2006, Smith received the President’s Award for excellence in leadership and service, and will receive the McCroskey Fellowship for academic excellence in the fall of 2006. In his spare time, he enjoys fly fishing, golf and skiing. Following graduation from WSU, he hopes to attend law school and to pursue a career in politics. He is the son of Stacy and Jim Loudermilk of Spokane and Clinton Smith of Northern California.
