WSU, regional conductor headed for Russian academy

PULLMAN – Nicholas Wallin, assistant professor of music at Washington State University, has been accepted to the International Academy of Advanced Conducting (IAAC) in St. Petersburg, Russia, July 23 through Aug. 6.

This will be Wallin’s first trip to Russia.

“I am interested to interact with professional musicians in a different country,” said Wallin. “Some of the repertoire that I will be conducting is Russian, and I hope to really learn about the performance practices from the musicians who have been trained in that tradition.”

Wallin’s IAAC instructors are professional conductors in Europe, primarily Russia. He will study with Yuri Temirkanov, music director of the St. Petersburg State Philharmonic and former music director of the Baltimore Symphony.

During the academy, Wallin will conduct two public performances, including one by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Society Symphony Orchestra.

At the conclusion of the academy the orchestra will select one or two conductors to guest conduct the orchestra in the upcoming season.

Wallin conducts the WSU Symphony Orchestra and teaches conducting and private lessons in both tuba and euphonium. In addition to his duties at the university, he is music director and conductor of the Washington Idaho Symphony.

Prior to his appointment at WSU, Wallin served as conductor of the Campus Orchestra and assistant conductor of the Symphony Orchestra at the University of Minnesota. While in Minnesota Wallin also held the position of music director and conductor of the Buffalo Community Orchestra.

Wallin earned his doctor of musical arts degree in conducting with a secondary area in music theory from the University of Minnesota in 2004. He earned a master of music degree in orchestral conducting from the Peabody Conservatory of Music. He holds both the bachelor of music and master of music degrees in tuba performance and also a bachelor of arts degree in mathematics from Northwestern University.
