Libraries names four finalists for director position

The search committee has named four finalists for the position of new director of WSU Libraries. Candidates will visit the WSU-Pullman campus in April to interview. Faculty and staff are invited to attend the open sessions, which will be announced through WSU Announcements after schedules are finalized.

The four candidates are: Scott Walter, Roxanne Sellberg, Sharon Weiner, and Cindy Kaag.

Scott Walter
Scott Walter, assistant dean of Libraries for Information and Instructional Services and Visiting Assistant Professor of Teaching and Leadership at the University of Kansas is scheduled to visit campus April 16-18. Walter received his M.A. in Russian Area Studies from Georgetown University, his M.A. in Education from American University, and his M.L.S. and M.S. in History & Philosophy of Education from Indiana University. Walter recently completed his Ph.D. in Higher Education Administration at Washington State.

Prior to going to Kansas, Walter served as the Interim Assistant Director for Public Services & Outreach at the WSU Libraries, where he also served as Interim Head of Library Instruction and Head of the George B. Brain Education Library. Walter has also served as Collection Manager for Education at The Ohio State University Libraries, and as Humanities and Education Reference Librarian at the University of Missouri-Kansas City.

Currently a visiting faculty member in the School of Education at the University of Kansas, Walter has also taught in the School of Education and the American Studies Program at Indiana University, in the School of Education at Indiana State University, in the College of Education and the General Education Program at Washington State University, in the School of Library & Information Science at San Jose State University, and in the Graduate School of Library & Information Science at the University of Illinois.

His research interests are in the areas of information literacy instruction and assessment; education libraries and librarianship; academic libraries and librarianship; professional and continuing education in library and information science; adult learning theory and faculty development with a focus on college teaching.

Roxanne Sellberg
Roxanne Sellberg, assistant university librarian for Technical Services at Northwestern University is scheduled to visit campus April 23-25. Sellberg received her specialist degree from Indiana University, her M.L.S. with a specialization in cataloging from the University of California, Los Angeles and her bachelor of arts from Wichita State University.

Sellberg served as head of the Cataloging Division at the University of Washington and head of the Catalog Management Department, Acting Systems Officer and Head of the Automated Processing Department at Indiana University. At the University of Nebraska-Lincoln she served as Intercampus Bibliographic Database Quality Control coordinator and Monographic Cataloging Librarian.

Currently she is responsible for leading and supervising all aspects of the work of four technical services departments: acquisitions, cataloging, preservation, and serial management functions. Northwestern University Library’s business and finance, public relations, and digitization project management operations also report to her. Sellberg recently designed a new organization model for digitization activities; she has also served as the acting serials department head, the acting financial manager, the acting public relations director and is currently the acting preservation department head.

Sharon Gray Weiner
Sharon Gray Weiner, director of the Peabody Library at Vanderbilt University, is scheduled to visit WSU April 25-27. Weiner received her M.L.S. from the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1982 and she is near completion of coursework for an Ed.D. in Higher Education Leadership at Vanderbilt University.

Weiner assumed the position of director of Peabody Library at Vanderbilt in 2002. Prior to that she served as head of Reference and Education Services and head of the Information Services Department in the Health Sciences Library at the University of Buffalo.

She is co-chairperson of the National Forum on Information Literacy and chair-elect of the Special Libraries Association Education Division. She is past president of the Special Libraries Association Southern Appalachian Chapter. She has been the principal investigator for a number of grant-funded projects. Weiner is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals. She received the State University of New York Chancellor’s Award for Excellence in Librarianship in 1999.

Her research interests are academic library leadership; the role of the library in higher education; and organization of the literature of emerging and cross-disciplinary fields.

Cindy Kaag
Cindy Stewart Kaag, interim director of the WSU Libraries is scheduled to interview on campus April 30-May 2. She received her M.A. in 1975 in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Her undergraduate and post graduate work focused on history and Scandinavian studies.

She joined the faculty of WSU in 1986 and was head of collections in Owen Science and Engineering Library for ten years before becoming head of the George Brain Education Library and then Owen Science and Engineering and Fisher Agricultural Science Libraries. Prior to her assignment as interim director, Kaag served as interim assistant director for Public Services and Outreach.

Kaag has been very active in American Library Association committees and is a past president of the Reference and User Services Association.

In addition to publishing on collection development, Kaag has developed an extensive subject-indexed and annotated internet-searchable database of almost 12,000 citations to scientific research on Yellowstone National Park, accessible at http://www.wsu.edu/~kaag/index.html.

Ginny Steel, former director of Libraries, accepted a position at UC Santa Cruz the summer of 2005 and Cindy Kaag has served as interim director of the Libraries since that time.

The search committee was appointed in September, 2005. Erich Lear, Dean of Liberal Arts is chairing the search committee. The search committee has been acting on behalf of the students, faculty and staff to identify candidates. There will be many opportunities for the candidates to interact with the community at large during their visits. Everyone is strongly urged to attend the interviews and provide feedback to the provost.
