Grammy winner featured at jazz concert April 11

PULLMAN — A jazz concert featuring Grammy Award winning saxophonist Jeff Coffin is set for  8 p.m. Tuesday, April 11, in Bryan Hall Theatre.

Coffin will perform with the WSU Jazz Big Band, which is directed by Greg Yasinitsky and which earned first place at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival. He will also perform with VOJAZZ (vocal jazz ensemble) directed by Noel Barbuto. The concert will be free of charge.

Since 1997, Coffin has traveled the world with Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, performing and recording with such musicians as The Dave Matthews Band, Branford Marsalis, Mike Clark’s Prescription Trio, Garth Brooks, Van Morrison, J.D. Souther, Vinnie Colaiuta, Bob Moses, Stanton Moore, George Porter Jr., John Scofield, Lynyrd Skynyrd, and the Wailers. Along the way, Coffin has absorbed an astounding range of influences.

The program will include Coffin’s “Wobble” and “Tall and Lanky,” as well as the premiere of three arrangements by WSU students: “Brotherly Love” composed by Chris Siegmund, Billy Strayhorn’s “Satin Doll” arranged by Derek Gore, and a new, composition by Bryan Werry. Featured soloists will include trumpeters Matt Reid and John Gronberg, saxophonists Adam Donohue and Siegmund, pianist Werry and bassist Matt Grimes.
