With deep green and purple walls and counters, wooden cabinets, stainless steel appliances and a spot for the dog dish, a kitchen created by WSU student Manda Glover has won first place in the National Kitchen & Bath Association 2006 Student Design Competition.
The sophomore from Tacoma is majoring in interior design in the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. She used a painting by Cuban artist Dionisio Perkings as her inspiration to create a kitchen that satisfied the needs of her fictitious clients, Brad and Penelope.
The design challenge was to open up the kitchen to the dining area to create a social space while at the same time accommodating the clients’ differing styles, physical heights and capabilities.
“This definitely encourages me to keep going in my program,” said Glover. “Hopefully, it will afford me some more opportunities in terms of internships and employment. It really speaks to the strength of the interior design program at WSU.”
