They could be spending a week on a sunny beach, but instead, a large group of WSU students will head to New Orleans for spring break to help out with hurricane relief efforts.
Working through Campus Crusade for Christ and Habitat for Humanity, WSU’s group of about 110 students will be the largest student group nationwide participating in the effort during the week of March 10-17.
“It was a community service activity that I really felt called to help out with,” said Jesse Radoslovich, an architecture student who is participating. “There is so much damage down there still. They obviously need manpower.”
The students will be helping in clean-up efforts in the St. Bernard Parish area and will also be doing some construction on homes as well as serving at a local food distribution center. They will travel in 14 vans each day from a Habitat for Humanity camp to their work site.
The students received support from the ASWSU Senate and the WSU Residence Hall Association to cover some of the van and gasoline costs. The students, who are not required to be affiliated with Campus Crusade, provided their own airfare and paid a $30 registration fee for food and lodging.
