WSU Urban Campuses Plan Cougar Pride Days Activities

PULLMAN, Wash. — Planning is underway for volunteer efforts at Washington State University urban campuses as part of the Cougar Pride Days annual spring spruce-up event.

Activities on the WSU Spokane, WSU Tri-Cities and WSU Vancouver campuses will take place during the spring, but may be on dates different than the university and City of Pullman event set for March 22-April 4 in Pullman.

At WSU Spokane, tentative plans include picking up litter on undeveloped areas of campus and along the Spokane River bordering campus, said Jon Schad, the campus facility operations director. In addition, if weather is frost free, flowers may be planted in beds along Spokane Falls Boulevard, which runs through campus.

Earth Month, which is celebrated during April, may be when WSU Tri-Cities has its activities. According to Jerry Massey, campus facility operations manager, tentative plans include cleaning and picking up in campus garden areas and maintaining the campus’ Adopt-a-Highway section of State Route 240, the highway between Richland and Vantage. In addition, yard work at homes of elderly area residents may take place.

Activities at WSU Vancouver may include shrub bed maintenance; blackberry and brush removal; upholstery and office cleaning; hiking trail clean up and construction; and disc golf course modification, said Bill Kelley, campus facilities operations manager. A highlight of washing campus motor pool fleet vehicles would be day care pre-school children washing the campus Public Safety squad car. Included in the event will be a barbecue with prize drawings for volunteers.
