TIAA-CREF increases investment choices, advice

New investment opportunities and enhanced financial services are being offered through TIAA-CREF retirement and investment benefits to WSU employees. Detailed information will be arriving in the mail in the next few weeks.
Among the improvements is the addition of:

• Lifecycle Funds, which provide a ready-made diversified portfolio using TIAA-CREF mutual funds as the underlying investment. Employees choose a target year of retirement between 2010 and 2040 (in five-year increments) and the fund allocates assets in a fashion appropriate to that stage of retirement planning. If retirement is far in the future, the investment mix is more aggressive. The mix is automatically shifted to more conservative choices as the retirement date nears. Lifecycle Funds are appropriate for those who prefer a hands-free approach to managing their portfolio.

• New investment fund choices, for those who prefer to actively manage their accounts. New choices include index funds and more mutual funds.

• Personalized and objective advice and planning services. Before, TIAA-CREF could offer information, but not investment counsel. Now, it now provides advice via sophisticated planning tools from Ibbotson Associates, a nationally respected financial adviser. This free counsel will be provided one-on-one in person or on the phone to ensure the highest level of attention and security.

“We are excited about these changes to WSU’s retirement and tax-deferred investment plans,“ said Marie Weiss, WSU benefits specialist. “With these investment choices, tools and other features, employees should find it easy to customize a retirement portfolio that suits their unique needs.”

For more information, contact TIAA-CREF at 800-842-2776 from 5 a.m. to 7 p.m. PT Monday-Friday and 6 a.m.-3 p.m. PT Saturday. Meetings with a counselor on the Pullman campus may be scheduled by going to the WSU website www.wsu.edu/benefits and clicking on Training.
