Events build on excellence

Washington State University once again will accent accomplishment and reward excellence during the 3rd Annual “World Class. Face to Face.” Showcase events, set for Friday, March 24, on the Pullman campus.

Last year’s participation by faculty, staff and students in the scholarly and creative Academic Showcase exhibit session was overwhelming, organizers agree. That event will move to Bohler Gym this year so posters and other presentations may be displayed all in one place.

“WSU is a top research institution. We say it and we know it, but the Academic Showcase gives us the opportunity to see the tremendous diversity of research projects and expertise,” said Mary Sanchez-Lanier, chair of the Academic Showcase subcommittee.

“Presenters come from all the WSU campuses and WSU Extension, so the event is truly a celebration of excellence for the entire WSU system. In addition, it is an opportunity to interact with and appreciate our colleagues from outside our own colleges.”

Also on the committee with Sanchez-Lanier are: Gerald Berthiaume, Tom Brigham, John Nilson, Jim Petersen and Lori Wiest.

Dates for acceptance of abstracts for the Academic Showcase are Monday, Jan. 16, through Friday, Feb. 24. Online abstract submission will be available at the www.showcase.wsu.edu website.

Reservations for the day’s two other highlights — the Celebrating Excellence Recognition Banquet and the all-university luncheon featuring a presentation by the Distinguished Faculty Address awardee — may be made at the same website beginning Friday, Feb. 10. The banquet honors recipients of WSU’s top faculty and staff awards, as well as newly tenured and promoted faculty.

Chairing the steering committee for all the day’s events will be Frances McSweeney, vice provost for faculty affairs. Also on the committee are: Brigham, Donna Clark, Ev Davis, Karen Fischer, Mary Gresch, Gary Lindsey, Ron Mittelhammer, Petersen, Sanchez-Lanier, Dave Turnbull and Jim Zuba.

“The Academic Showcase and our recognition events provide a wonderful opportunity to learn about the work of other members of the faculty and staff and to celebrate their accomplishments,” McSweeney said. “Last year’s day of celebration was a big hit. We’re hoping to make it even better this year.”
