Explore the newest program to boost top achiever visits

The number of high-achieving students attending WSU continues to rise. To build on this upswing, Admissions and New Student Programs launched the Explore program this fall.

Explore is a focused on-campus Saturday visitation program for outstanding high school seniors throughout the Northwest, providing the opportunity to experience WSU’s world-class programs, faculty and facilities.

The program is offered by invitation to high school seniors with GPAs of 3.6 or above or SAT scores of at least 1200. This year’s first-ever event hosted 127 top students, five of whom WSU already has invited to the university as Regents Scholars, and 154 parents and guests.

Students attended sessions with several of the academic colleges, took facilities tours and gained hands-on experience through numerous workshops. Workshops included “First in My Family,” for first-generation college students, and “Customize Your Experience,” which provided tools for students to broaden their resource base.

Rebecca Meehan, campus visitation coordinator, said Explore received positive feedback from student and parent attendees alike, and program expansion is expected for next fall.

Explore will continue as a fall-semester program for exceptional students. However, Admissions and New Student Programs also offers Destination, a spring program for high-ability students, as well as several Previews throughout the year.
