China scholar probes culture and economics

Considered by many to be the world’s leading expert on Chinese economics, Kenneth Pomeranz will take part in two public events during his visit to WSU Oct. 17-18.

The Chancellor’s Professor of History and professor of East Asia languages and literatures at University of California, Irvine, will lecture on “Historical Perspectives on the East Asian Miracle” at 4:10 p.m. Monday, Oct. 17, in Bryan 305. The talk will explore the extremely rapid economic growth of East Asia, investigate the patterns of trade, social change, and the environmental impact of industrialization, and suggest implications for contemporary affairs.

Pomeranz will take part in a seminar-style presentation on popular religion in Chinese history at 4:15 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 18, in the Bundy Reading Room, Avery Hall.

Pomeranz is the 2005 Phi Beta Kappa (national honorary fraternity) Visiting Scholar.
