Washington State University Dining Services has announced that all dining facilities, espresso bars and markets will now serve Fair Trade Coffee.
“As consumers, each time we consciously use our purchasing power, we live the statement ‘think globally, act locally,'” said Gina Murray, marketing coordinator for dining services.
Fair Trade Coffee practices significantly raise the standard of living in Third World coffee growing areas, Murray said.
“Paying farmers a minimum price, currently $1.26 per pound, increases their financial ability to improve their standard of living, educate their children and help improve their local economies,” she said.
“Organic and sustainable demand by consumers will drive the food industry to adopt practices that benefit us and our world,” Murray said. “WSU Dining Services will continue to identify products that help make a difference.”
WSU Dining Services has elected to “hold the line” on prices to students, staff and faculty in changing to Fair Trade Coffee.
