WSU admits four students displaced by Katrina

Washington State University has completed admission of four students who were displaced by Hurricane Katrina. The university is in the process of working with at least seven other students from the affected areas who have made inquiries about admission to WSU.

The four students, who have begun classes on the Pullman campus, are from Tulane University and Xavier University of Louisiana.

Officials have also assessed the university’s capacity and determined that WSU could educate and house an additional 100 students, said President V. Lane Rawlins. Rawlins said academic, housing and financial aid personnel from WSU will work with any affected student on an individual basis to meet his or her needs.

“With the continuing news about all the work that must be done to restore basic services along many areas of the Gulf Coast, it is imperative for all of us to do whatever we can to help meet the needs of the people from that region. WSU has the capacity, and we want to aid students whose educations have been disrupted by this disaster,” Rawlins said.
