WSU Announces 2005 Art a la Carte Series Schedule

PULLMAN, Wash. – Washington State University will kick off Art a la Carte, a series of noontime art lectures, at 12:10 p.m. Thursdays in the Compton Union Building, Cascade Room 123.

The fall series opens Oct. 13 with Sheila Converse, faculty member in the School of Music and Theatre Arts, who will discuss “What Do Top Ten Songs Tell Us about Ourselves?” Converse will present seven songs that made the top 10 hit list between the years 1900 and 2000. She will also lead a discussion on how popular music both reflects and creates self-image.

Artist Anna-Maria Shannon and documentary filmmaker Brenda Congdon-Power will present “Adoring Adornment: Jewelry as Wearable Art” on Oct. 20. Artists from “The Brilliant Body: Jewelry as Adornment” exhibit, to be displayed in the CUB Gallery, will talk about their process and inspiration. Documentary filmmaker Congdon-Power will talk about her experience working with these artists.

The series continues Oct. 27 with Paul Brians, faculty member in the English department, as he discusses “The Roots of Star Wars, or Why Princess Leia Fights Like a Girl.” Brians uses a multimedia lecture to present the origins of the Star Wars trilogy. He will also discuss how conservative George Lucas makes the sex roles in his movies, compared to the films that inspire him.

“Art of the Draw: A brief look at comic books in America” will be the featured lecture Nov. 3.  Gerald Steffen, graphic designer and WSU artist, will present an overview of the history of comic books in America, their influence on popular culture and how they are made.

The series will conclude Nov. 10 with the outdoor photography competition awards and presentation. Awards will be presented for this year’s exhibit and competition, along with a discussion on the art of still photography in the outdoors. The WSU Outdoor Recreation Center will co-sponsor the event.

The WSU Museum of Art and the Office of Campus Involvement co-sponsor the Art a la Carte series. All lectures are free and open to the public.
