WSU Gallery to Present Early 20th Century Lingerie Collection

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University’s Compton Union Gallery will present “Lace, Lawn and Lingerie in La Belle Epoque,” an exhibit of early 20th century wardrobe items, Aug. 22 through Sept. 8.

The exhibit’s common elements are derived from classic lingerie. Constructed of fine cottons, such as lawn and batiste and embellished with ribbon, lace and embroidery, these ruched (ruffled) and pleated creations were sometimes worn as hidden undergarments and at other times were boldly exposed.

The Compton Union Gallery is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Admission is free. The gallery features work by local and visiting artists, special traveling exhibits and displays of an educational and informative nature. Located at the east end of the Compton Union Building on the first floor, the gallery provides an informal and easily accessible art experience.

The exhibition of garments was donated by Carolyn Schactler to the permanent collection of the WSU Apparel, Merchandising, Design and Textiles Department.
