WSU Spokane Architecture Faculty Book Published in Chinese

SPOKANE, Wash. — A textbook co-authored by David Wang, associate professor of architecture at Washington State University Spokane, and Linda Groat of the University of Michigan, has been released in a Chinese translation. The work, “Architectural Research Methods,” is published in China by the China Machine Press, Beijing.

When the book first came out in English (John Wiley & Sons, 2002), Wang cited the lack of an existing textbook, and the growing popularity of research-based architecture programs like the Master of Science in architecture program he coordinates at WSU Spokane, as his reasons for proposing the book to its American publisher. Wang also teaches in the Doctor of Design program at WSU Spokane, an interdisciplinary doctoral degree for professionals and scholars in the design disciplines.

Over the past seven years, Wang has lectured  on architecture design and research at five Chinese universities, including the Xi’an Jiaotong University, the Kunming University of Science and Technology, where he served as a visiting professor, and the University of Hong Kong.  In 2004, Wang gave a week-long course on architectural research at the Oslo Academy of Architecture in Norway, where his book is currently used by doctoral students in architecture.

Architecture and construction is booming in China, and Wang sees this translation (taken on by translators independent of Wang) as sign of the demand for new knowledge in the field.

The 420-page book (English edition) covers research methods ranging from quantitative analysis to co-relational research to simulation research to qualitative research, including history research. It is available at Amazon.com, Barnes and Noble and the Students Book Corp. (Bookie); list price is $49.95.

Wang received a doctorate in architecture from the University of Michigan, and a master’s degree from the University of Pennsylvania. He is a registered architect in Michigan and Pennsylvania. He received WSU Spokane’s Faculty Excellence Award for 2001 and has received certificates for teaching excellence from the Associated Students of WSU Spokane for 2004 and 2005.
