Two WSU Press titles selected for The Corps 33

Washington State University Press announced that two WSU Press titles, the Lewis and Clark Trail Maps three-volume series and Lewis and Clark Lexicon of Discovery, will be included in The Corps 33, which are 33 essential core books about the Lewis and Clark Expedition. The books were selected to honor the expedition’s bicentennial.

Books in The Corps 33 were chosen by the Washington State Library, the Governor-appointed Washington Lewis and Clark Trail Committee and the Washington State Chapter of the Lewis and Clark Trail Heritage Foundation.

The Lewis and Clark Trail Maps series, by Martin Plamondon II, uses measurements and notes from expedition journals to reconstruct maps of the trail. The selection committee called the series “a masterpiece of cartography.”

Author Alan H. Hartley spent five years researching the history, people and physical world of the expedition to complete his book, Lewis and Clark Lexicon of Discovery, which includes a dictionary of words used during the expedition’s time.

The Corps 33 selections are part of “200 Years, 200 Books: A Lewis and Clark Expedition Bibliography,” compiled for the expedition’s bicentennial celebration. When complete, the bibliography will contain the 200 most significant books published about Lewis and Clark.

A complete list of The Corps 33 can be found at the Office of the Secretary of State Web page, http://www.secstate.wa.gov/history/. For more information on WSU Press, go to wsupress.wsu.edu.
