Ponds Planting Project at WSU Reset in April

PULLMAN, Wash. – Wet weather and saturated soils have forced postponement of an effort by volunteer workers to do environmental restoration on the edge of two ponds at Washington State University this week.

The work is being rescheduled for 2-5 p.m. daily from April 18-23. More than 40 volunteers who signed up for the project are being contacted by the WSU Community Service Learning Center to reschedule. Others are welcome to volunteer for the new dates.

The work was to take place this week as part of the university and city of Pullman’s Cougar Pride Days 2005.

“The extremely saturated clay soils at the ponds will become hardpan if dug with this much moisture content.  We could do more harm to the site than improvement, and that is not a wise use of volunteer time. Once the site has dried out for a week or so, we will try again,“ said Bobbie Ryder, Cougar Pride Days committee member, explaining the postponement.

To volunteer, contact the Community Service Learning Center at (509) 335-7708, cslc@wsu.edu. For additional project information, contact Ryder at (509) 335-2192, bryder@wsu.edu or Melanie Brown, WSU Community Service Learning Center director at (509) 335-5401, melanieb@wsu.edu.
