Washington High School Principals Invited to Nominate Top Students for WSU Regents Scholarship

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University President V. Lane Rawlins has invited Washington high school principals to nominate their top-two outstanding juniors for WSU’s prestigious Regents Scholarship Program.

Eligible schools include each Washington public high school and private schools approved by the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction with at least 100 students in grades 9-12. More than $4 million may be awarded to nominees who choose to attend WSU.

“The Regents Scholars Program aims to recognize exceptional students and keep them in the state of Washington for their college education,” Rawlins said. “By acknowledging their accomplishments and offering them opportunities for significant support toward their education at WSU, we want to signify how important they are to our state’s future. These students will have numerous opportunities for leadership roles while at the university and will enjoy our supportive and empowering community.”

In 2004 more than 280 high school administrators nominated students whose combined grade point average was 3.94. Nominees included student body presidents and senators, National Honor Society members, musicians, varsity athletes and community volunteers.

All nominated students who qualify and subsequently enroll on the Pullman campus will be named Crimson Regents Scholars and are guaranteed a minimum of $3,000 in scholarship support, renewable for one year. Students who are selected as one of 75 Silver Regents Scholars will receive a minimum of $4,000 in scholarship support, renewable for one year. Students who are selected as one of 25 Distinguished Regents Scholars will receive a four-year scholarship for the full amount of undergraduate resident tuition, mandatory fees, a book stipend and on-campus housing and board.

All nominated students must have a minimum grade point average of 3.80. In addition, they must have minimum test scores of 1,200 on the SAT, 180 on the PSAT or 26 on the ACT to be nominated. Scholarship recipients must meet WSU admission requirements for the 2006 fall semester. Each of the Distinguished Regents Scholars’ high schools will receive a plaque with the distinguished scholars’ name to recognize the school’s contributions to the student’s education.

Nominations must be received by the WSU Office of Scholarship Services by May 6. Questions can be directed to April Seehafer, scholarship and financial aid counselor, Office of Scholarship Services, at (509) 335-1059 or via e-mail at scholarships@wsu.edu.
