WSU Communicators Take Honors in Annual CASE Award Competition

PULLMAN, Wash. – University relations department staff members at Washington State University received a number of awards this year in the annual Communications Awards Competition sponsored by the District VIII Council for Advancement and Support of Education.

The competition, which draws marketing and communications entries from 81 member higher education institutions in Alaska, Alberta, British Columbia, Idaho, Manitoba, Montana, Northwest Territories, Nunavut, Oregon, Saskatchewan, Washington and the Yukon, is one of the oldest and largest programs of its type among CASE districts nationally.

“These awards recognize the high quality of both the strategic direction and the creative teamwork that has gone into the university’s integrated marketing and communications efforts,” said Sally Savage, vice president for university relations. “It’s very gratifying to see the work of these WSU professionals receive such well-deserved recognition in what is widely regarded as a very competitive and prestigious regional competition.”

WSU’s Washington State Magazine took a number of top honors in the competition this year, winning three writing awards in the category of “Features & Articles in Magazines, Newsletters, Tabloids and Web Sites.”

The magazine received a Gold Award for an article entitled “No Hollow Promise “ by writer Ken Olsen; a Bronze Award for an article entitled “Mount St. Helens” by Washington State Magazine editor Tim Steury; and a Bronze Award for another article by Olsen entitled “All That Remains.”

In the Public Relations “Projects” category, WSU staff members Anna Sherwood, David Hoyt, Sharon White, Mary Gresch, Kris Johnson, Bob Hubner and Shelly Hanks received a Silver Award for their work on WSU’s “Graduate Student Recruitment Marketing Campaign.”

A Bronze Award was given in the Visual Design, Illustration category of “Visual Design–Individual Publication” to WSU Publishing and WSU staff members Gary Lindsey, Patrick Brommer and Ed Sala for their work in developing a poster in support of the university’s Festival of Contemporary Art/Music.

WSU staff members Renee Hofeldt, Nicole Wood, Anna Sherwood and Rance Larsen also received a Bronze Award in the Electronic Media category of “Overall Web Site” for their work in developing the WSU Future Student Web site.

This year’s District VIII CASE Communications Awards competition attracted 493 entries. Of those, 150 earned gold, silver or bronze awards.
