Gloria Tristani, former Commissioner on the Federal Communications Commission, will speak at the Charlotte Friel Memorial Communication Lecture on March 1.
Tristani’s lecture, which takes place at 5 p.m. on March 1 in Communication Addition Room 21, is titled “The New Censorship: Have We Gone Too Far?”
While serving as FCC Commissioner from 1997 to 2001, Tristani was committed to ensuring equal telecommunications benefits to all. She fought for low power FM radio, minority media ownership, and was involved in consumer issues such as children’s exposure to violence in the media and broadcast indecency.
Tristani, who was the 2002 Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in New Mexico, now serves as managing director of the Office of Communication of the United Church of Christ, Inc.
The Friel Lecture, which focuses on trends in the news media, was established in 1973 by Jack and Catherine Friel to honor their daughter Charlotte, a 1951 WSU graduate. The lecture is sponsored by the Edward R. Murrow School of Communication.
A reception will follow the event in the Communication Addition Atrium.
