Changes to European social structure and economy that occurred after Arab oil replaced coal will be discussed by professor Ellis Jay Goldberg, director of the Middle East Center at the Jackson School of International Studies, University of Washington, at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 18, in Smith CUE 202. The lecture, “United States’ Hegemony, Arab Oil and the Making of Democratic Europe,” is free to the public.
“Professor Goldberg’s speech grants WSU students a world view of the issues affecting the United States and the Middle East,” said Robert Staab, senior instructor and coordinator of WSU’s Asia 301 class, “East Meets West.”
Goldberg’s books and essays have focused on labor, political and human rights issues in the Middle East. He holds masters and doctorate degrees from Berkeley and earned his B.A. in English from Harvard. He has held two visiting professorships at Princeton University.
