Faculty earn Smith, Sahlin, Distinguished Address awards

The first five faculty recipients of awards bestowed annually in the spring by Washington State University have been selected. They will be honored publicly on April 1 at the Celebrating Excellence recognition banquet. Faculty awards and recipients include:

• Marian E. Smith Faculty Achievement Award: Phillip L. Senger, professor, Department of Animal Sciences.
This award recognizes unusually significant and meritorious achievement in teaching during the academic year, including successful, innovative performance in instruction. A $5,000 award is presented to the winner.

• Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Instruction: Lisa J. McIntyre, associate professor, Department of Sociology.
This award recognizes outstanding accomplishment and national recognition in instruction that contributes to excellence in the instructional programs of WSU. This honor includes an award of $3,000.

• Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Public Service: Scott C. Matulich professor, School of Economic Sciences.
This award recognizes outstanding performance toward fulfilling WSU’s public service mission. It honors exceptional accomplishments in extending instruction, research and supportive resources to a broader public. This honor carries with it a $3,000 award.

• Sahlin Faculty Excellence Award for Research, Scholarship and Arts: Victor Villanueva, professor, Department of English.
This award recognizes outstanding accomplishment in research, scholarship or arts. It is awarded for major research or a creative contribution or series of contributions completed at WSU. The contribution can be empirical, theoretical or artistic, but must be widely recognized as highly meritorious and must have had a significant impact. A $3,000 award is presented to the winner.

• Distinguished Faculty Address 2005: Mark G. Kuzyk, professor and associate chair, Department of Physics.
This award recognizes the work of a faculty member whose achievements in research, scholarship and teaching place that person in the front ranks of his or her discipline. Kuzyk will deliver the Distinguished Faculty Address at the Showcase luncheon. The honor carries with it a $2,500 award.

Honors to be announced in upcoming issues of WSU Today include the President’s Employee Excellence and Eminent Faculty awards, as well as Regents Professors and newly tenured/promoted faculty. Articles and photos featuring all the award winners are planned for a special March 25 issue of WSU Today.
