Yolanda King Speaks at MLK Opening Event Jan. 12

PULLMAN, Wash. — Motivational speaker and actress Yolanda King will lecture and perform at 7 p.m. Jan. 12 at Washington State University in the first of a series of Pullman and Moscow events celebrating the life and work of her father, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr.

James Bledsoe, MLK celebration chair, said “King’s presentation, ‘Multicultural Diversity ~ The New Frontier,’ is expected to inspire positive social change and provide a vision for world peace.”

The event will be in WSU’s Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum and is free and open to the public.

A Los Angeles resident, she will be the second King child to speak during a MLK event in Pullman. Her brother, Martin Luther King III, spoke in 1995.

  • Jan. 13 – A gospel concert by God’s Harmony, a WSU student musical group, begins at noon in Holland Library Atrium.
  • Jan. 14 – A WSU Department of Comparative Ethnic Studies brown bag lecture about social justice begins at noon in the Compton Union Building Cascade Room.
  • Jan. 15 – The Latah County Human Rights Task Force Breakfast will be from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Moscow Junior High School multipurpose room. Tickets are $6 for adults and $4 for children. Tickets must be purchased in advance at Book People of Moscow, 521 S. Main St. The MLK Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. at “K” House on the WSU campus. A Pullman Unity March will start at 1:45 p.m. at “K” House and end at Bryan Hall Auditorium, where the spoken word performance by lyricist-musician-poet-actor Saul Williams will begin at 3 p.m.
  • Jan. 16 – The MLK canned food drive will be held at Pullman and Moscow Safeway stores from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. A celebration service by Bethel African Methodist Episcopal Church will start at 5 p.m. in Todd Hall Auditorium.
  • Jan. 17 – The Social Justice Education Project – “Freedom School” will begin at 9 a.m. in the CUB Ballroom.
  • Jan. 18 – The Moscow Unity March will begin at 5 p.m. in downtown Moscow’s Friendship Square and end at the University of Idaho Student Union Building, where the MLK Distinguished Service Awards banquet will begin at 6 p.m.
