Activities planned for WSU families and fans

A full slate of activities will commence here this Friday (Oct. 29) as the Washington State University Cougars once again celebrate Dad’s Weekend and make ready to take on the Trojans of the University of Southern California in a Pac-10 football match-up Saturday afternoon (Oct. 30) at Martin Stadium.

Early events on Friday will begin at 10 a.m. with the display of a newly opened exhibition at the WSU Museum of Art featuring the works of nationally renowned artist and WSU Professor Patrick Siler. A free motorcycle show on the Beasley Performing Arts Coliseum concourse will follow at noon and continue until 9 p.m.

By Friday evening, the events will kick into full swing with a Dad’s Weekend dinner buffet from 5 to 8 p.m. in the Regency Room of the Compton Union Building, a Feast of the Arts Dinner beginning at 6 p.m. in the Todd Hall Dining Room, a Greek Alumni Reception beginning at 5 p.m. at the Lewis Alumni Centre, a Sigma Iota Winefest from 5 to 7 p.m. and again from 8 to 10 p.m. at the Gladish Community Center, and the opening of a variety of displays and other activities across the campus.

At 8 p.m. on Friday, Jesse Ventura will speak at the Beasley Coliseum. Dance enthusiasts can watch the Pullman International Folk Dancers perform from 7:30 to 10 p.m. in Smith Gym 115 and then move on to the CUB Lair at 10 p.m. to attend Latino Night Dance “Dias de Los Muertos,” featuring Salsa, Cumbia, Merengue and Norteno music, scheduled to continue into the early hours on Saturday morning.
Dad’s Breakfast begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in the Compton Union Building Ballroom and will be followed by a 10 a.m. guided tour of a campus-wide display of bronze sculptures created by a number of nationally recognized artists at the Walla Walla Foundry.

The Physics and Astronomy Club Pumpkin Drop – in which pumpkins and other fall produce will be dropped from the tallest building on campus in a reenactment of Galileo Galilei’s famous experiment – will begin at 11 a.m. between the Webster Sciences Building and the Institute for Shock Physics. From noon to 1:30 p.m., the School of Economic Sciences will present “Doughnuts for Dad,” featuring free coffee and doughnuts at the Ensminger Agricultural Pavilion.

Also on Saturday, there will be four free one-hour Cougar Conversations sessions taught by WSU faculty members. The sessions are scheduled as follows:

“Air Pollution in the Seattle-Portland Urban Airshed: Local Measurements, Satellite Measurements and Air Quality” by George Mount, civil and environmental engineering

“What is Interior Design? Why it isn’t HGTV” by Nancy Brown, Interdisciplinary Design Institute, WSU Spokane
·         1 p.m., CUB 214
“‘Fascinating’ the Mundane – A Series of Architectural Propositions for Eastern Washington” by Paul Hirzel, School of Architecture and Construction Management
·         1 p.m., CUB 232
“Sedentary Death Syndrome” by Sally Blank, health sciences, WSU Spokane
·         1 p.m., Todd Hall entrance off Glenn Terrell Mall (across from Holland Library)
“Chalk Talk with the Dean,” a walk and talk tour of the building with Dean Len Jessup to learn the inside story on exciting plans for the future of the College of Business.

A rally will be held at 1 p.m. at the Hollingbery Fieldhouse in advance of the 4 p.m. kickoff of the WSU-USC football game. Beginning at 9 p.m., there will be a performance by Drew Carey’s Improv All-Stars at the Beasley Coliseum.
