Sexual Violence Prevention Summit in Spokane Oct. 20

PULLMAN, Wash. — Washington State University Health and Wellness Services will host an Oct. 20 Campus Sexual Violence Prevention Summit in Spokane, where college health educators and victim service providers will offer the most current research and recommendations on preventing campus sexual violence.

Linda Langford, associate director of the Higher Education Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse and Violence Prevention, will present the center’s violence prevention framework and lead discussions on the best practices for sexual assault prevention. Her presence at the summit is designed to build on her February visit to WSU Pullman’s campus.

The center’s violence prevention framework is designed to help colleges evaluate campus violence problems and create a comprehensive and collaborative plan for violence prevention. It is based on social ecological theory used by public health agencies and the idea that health-related behavior is affected through multiple levels of influence: intrapersonal factors, interpersonal processes, institutional factors, community factors and public policy.

To effectively reduce violence, each of these factors must be addressed through a comprehensive and coordinated effort. Because of this, the need for developing a statewide coalition for campus sexual violence prevention will be discussed at the summit.

Langford has served as the center’s associate director since 1998. She has managed its prevention program evaluation projects for four years and currently directs the center’s violence prevention initiative. She holds a doctorate in behavioral science from the Harvard School of Public Health and is an assistant clinical professor at Tufts University School of Medicine.

The Spokane summit will run from 1-5 p.m. at the Red Lion Hotel at the Park, W. 303 North River Drive. The cost to attend is $50 per person.

The summit will be held in conjunction with the Pacific Coast College Health Association annual meeting to provide health educators from the West Coast region the opportunity to participate.
