PULLMAN, Wash. — Pianist and composer Brent Edstrom will perform with the Washington State University Jazz Big Band and VOJAZZ vocal jazz ensemble Tuesday, April 6, in Kimbrough Concert Hall on the WSU campus.
The concert is set for 8 p.m. and is free and open to the public.
Edstrom has performed with many top jazz artists, including Clark Terry, Lee Konitz, Ernie Watts, Jon Faddis, Bob Berg, Bob Mintzer and Peter Erskine. He currently works as a freelance writer and arranger for Hal Leonard Publishing Corp. Highlights of his publishing work include transcriptions and arrangements of the music of Art Tatum, Bill Evans, Kenny Barron, John Williams and others.
Edstrom is a member of the faculty at Whitworth College and has a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music and a bachelor’s degree from WSU
The program will include Edstrom’s composition “It Was a Dark and Stormy Night,” performed by the WSU Jazz Big Band. He will be featured as a piano soloist throughout the concert, including a performance of “Softly as in a Morning Sunrise” with trumpeter Matt Reid and bassist David Snider, first-place award winners at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival.
Faculty members Horace-Alexander Young, on vocals and saxophone, and Dave Jarvis, drums, will also be featured with the groups. Additional soloists will include trumpeters Brendan McMurphy and Matt Postle, saxophonists Junior Tupa’i and Jason Larsen, pianist Jesse Hadley and drummer Javin Grove.
