PULLMAN, Wash. – Matt Shaw and Ryan Lahne, Washington State University students and University Recreation employees, received national recognition for their involvement in collegiate recreational sports.
Matt Shaw, a WSU graduate student and a 1998 graduate of Monroe High School, was awarded the 2004 William N. Wasson Student Leadership and Academic Award from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association.
Named after NIRSA founder, Dr. William N. Wasson, the award recognizes outstanding undergraduate and graduate students who are active participants, employees or volunteers in collegiate recreational sports departments. Criteria for the award include self-improvement through leadership, academic success, activities, volunteerism and promoting inclusion.
Shaw was chosen from more than 100 candidates and is among 12 graduate students recognized nationally.
A first year graduate student studying athletic administration, he has worked for University Recreation for the past year as a graduate assistant for intramural sports.
He is the son of Kim and John Shaw of Monroe.
Ryan Lahne, 2004 University Recreation coordinator of intramural sports and youth programs, received a Horace Moody Award from the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association for outstanding commitment to student development.
The award recognizes professional members of NIRSA who have made contributions to student development through their encouragement, support and performance. Criteria for this award include participation in a mentor program or leadership conference, membership in a student leadership or professional development committee and presenting in a student professional workshop.
Lahne, a 1996 graduate of Bellevue East High School (Bellevue, Neb.), has a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska in business management and a master’s degree in sports managements from Purdue University. He is pursuing a master’s degree in business administration from WSU and will serve a second year on the NIRSA Family and Youth Committee.
He is the son of Vicki and David Lahne of Belleville, Ill.
Kathleen Hatch, director of University Recreation and the WSU golf course said, “I am proud of the many contributions Ryan and Matt make each day to provide meaningful programs and leadership opportunities to students at WSU. This recognition speaks to their commitment to involve and engage students, which ultimately help them achieve excellence in and out of the classroom.”
Both Shaw and Lahne will be recognized in April at the annual National Intramural-Recreational Sports conference in Albuquerque, N.M.
