Whoville musicians have nothing on these guys

Think of drummers as athletes. Then think of musical instruments as sculpture. BIG sculpture. Sculpture crafted from discarded pipes, springs and shell casings. Taken together, you’re thinking of Scrap Arts Music, a Vancouver, B.C., based contemporary music ensemble.

Scrap Arts Music will perform for free, 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 11, in Bryan Hall Theatre, sponsored by the Visual, Performing and Literary Arts Committee of Washington State University-Pullman.

With choreographed precision, five performers leap about the stage, hitting, moving and bowing 25 large-scale instruments — gong arrays, plankophones, ziggurat drums and other unique creations — built from salvaged and recycled industrial castoffs. Compositions fuse pop and world music with 21st century sounds.
