University Recreation Recognized in New York Times

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Department of University Recreation at Washington State University was mentioned in an Oct. 5 New York Times article, “Jacuzzi U? A Battle of Perks to Lure Students.”

The article discussed how more universities are using upscale exercise and recreational facilities to attract potential students. The Times claimed this trend has resulted in increased competition and spending among the nation’s universities in order to provide these facilities.

Along with WSU, the article also covered multi-million dollar recreational projects implemented at the University of Houston and Ohio State University.

University Recreation Director Kathleen Hatch was quoted several times in the piece and stated that the opening of the Student Recreation Center in 2001 helped contribute to WSU attaining a freshmen class with the best grade point average in the university’s history.
